A cover letter is a one-page document submitted alongside your CV (curriculum vitae) that introduces you to a prospective New Zealand employer, explains why you are applying for a specific role, and highlights the experience and skills that make you a strong candidate. It is your first opportunity to demonstrate communication skills and genuine interest in the organisation.
New Zealand cover letters typically follow a conservative professional format: your contact details at the top, the employer’s details below, a formal greeting (ideally to a named person), three to four focused paragraphs, and a professional sign-off. They are usually around 300–400 words and should be tailored to each role rather than recycled.
Recruiters in New Zealand read cover letters quickly, looking for evidence that you understand the role, have relevant experience, and are motivated to join their organisation. A generic, template-looking letter is almost always weaker than a concise, tailored one. This template gives you the structure; you supply the specifics.
Our cover letter template provides a proven structure that meets New Zealand recruiter expectations.

While a cover letter is not a legal document, certain New Zealand employment-law principles should shape what you include and what you leave out.

Formatted for New Zealand employers
The Human Rights Act 1993 and the Employment Relations Act 2000 prohibit discrimination on prohibited grounds including age, sex, marital status, religion, ethnic origin, disability, sexual orientation, and family status. Candidates are not required to disclose any of these matters in a cover letter or CV, and employers cannot ask for them in pre-employment screening except in limited circumstances. Keep your cover letter focused on skills, achievements, and role fit.
Employers may ask whether you have the right to work in New Zealand. If you are a New Zealand citizen, permanent resident, or hold a valid work visa, it is sensible to state this clearly in your cover letter to save recruiter time. Misrepresenting your immigration status is an offence under the Immigration Act 2009.
Employers must handle CV and cover letter information in accordance with the Privacy Act 2020 and the 13 Information Privacy Principles. You are entitled to know how your information will be used and to request access under IPP 6. Avoid including highly sensitive personal information (e.g. medical conditions, IRD numbers, bank details) in a cover letter.
Claims about qualifications, experience, and achievements should be accurate. Misrepresentation may amount to serious misconduct justifying dismissal if discovered during employment and, in some regulated industries, may breach professional obligations. Only name referees with their prior consent.
